The leader of the drone market has spoken. Answering the gap in the market, DJI officially steps into the 360-degree camera arena with the Osmo 360—a bold move, and perhaps an overdue one, considering the brand’s legacy in imaging innovation. This isn’t just another consumer-grade spherical camera. It’s DJI’s statement piece, a professional imaging tool armed with 1-inch 360° imaging and the first 360° camera with native 8K 50fps video capabilities.
With the Osmo 360, DJI is challenging the status quo of the 360 camera market,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI. “We are revolutionizing panoramic innovation by leveraging DJI’s long history of innovation in creative camera technology. With each technological breakthrough, from 1-inch 360° imaging with an industry-first square HDR sensor to outstanding low-light performance, we aim to change what’s possible in a 360 camera.
Breaking Down the Specs That Matter
The Osmo 360 introduces an industry-first square HDR sensor, which preserves the typical field of view of a 1-inch sensor and contributes to a 25% increase in sensor utilization, producing higher image quality with lower power consumption. All these benefits are achieved by simply eliminating the unused area of traditional rectangular sensors.
And then there’s the headline spec: 8K at 50fps video recording and an industry-best continuous recording time of up to 100 minutes at 8K/30fps on a single charge. That’s not just a flex. For VR content creators, having that extra frame rate in high resolution and great battery life will make all the difference. Besides that, the Osmo 360 also boasts an impressive 13.5 stops of dynamic range and a large 2.4 μm pixel, promising to deliver crisp and vibrant footage even when used in low-light settings.
Here’s where things get interesting for hybrid shooters. The Osmo 360 can seamlessly switch between front and rear lenses in single-lens mode, offering 5K 60fps flat video with a 155° field of view, or even 4K 120fps with a 170° ultra wide Boost Video mode. Think of this not just as a VR tool, but a dual-purpose action cam with stabilized single-lens shooting.
Weighing just 183 g, the Osmo 360 also features an advanced modular design that allows the camera to pack two large 1-inch 360 imaging lens modules into one ultra-compact body. Despite being such a compact-sized device, it has a built-in storage capacity of 105 GB, and it is built to withstand extreme conditions—capable of recording for over 1.5 hours in freezing conditions as low as -20° C (-4° F). Lastly, being a DJI gear, the Osmo 360 also gets the benefit of DJI’s ecosystem integration, such as native support for DJI’s wireless mic connection and a magnetic quick release design that is compatible with the Osmo Action series accessories.
As someone who is prolific with gear across both photography and video, I'll admit 360 cameras have never been a big part of my workflow. But with what DJI is bringing to the table, integrating their ecosystem—I’m genuinely excited to test hands-on how it could add value in a real production setup.
