How Far Have We Come With the Quality of Doorbell Cameras?

Doorbell cameras used to be equal amounts of hassle and help. Fast-forward to 2025, and the tech has transformed, offering clear footage, smart features, and reliable security. Looking for an alternative to the market leader’s pricey subscription, I went looking for better options. That’s when I found the Imou Doorbell 2S Kit, a battery-powered video doorbell that’s shown me just how far we’ve come.

The Past: Doorbell Cameras That Annoyed as Much as They Protected

Early doorbell cameras, while certainly more useful than not having one, were a mixed bag of results. My first doorbell camera, installed years back, was sufficient in bright daylight but useless in dim or stormy weather. Not great for someone who lives in the West of Scotland. Night vision barely worked, and when it did, it was so grainy I couldn’t tell if there was someone there until they were very close. Its daytime motion detection was a nightmare, pinging my phone every time the wind blew the surrounding bushes and trees. Half the time, it missed actual visitors, leaving me to scroll through useless alerts, and in the end, I silenced the app. These earlier devices were a glimpse of what doorbell cameras could be, but they fell short of delivering peace of mind.

The Present: Smarter, Sharper, and Subscription-Free

After ditching that well-known doorbell brand in the latest in their ever-rising subscription costs, I wanted a camera that didn’t hide features behind a paywall or force cloud storage. The Imou Doorbell 2S Kit stood out with its ample 2K recording, 3 MP camera resolution, and local storage options. You may wonder if 2K is enough—certainly, on this platform we are used to discussing cameras at 4K or 8K—but do we need Hollywood-grade video for home security? Considering that my previous doorbell camera recorded in 720p HD, I decided that 2K—with four times the number of pixels over 720p—is plenty for the purpose of the camera in terms of detecting movement and clearly displaying faces and action.

Testing the Imou Doorbell 2S Kit: A Smart Eye on My Driveway

I installed the doorbell on the door most often used, which faces my driveway, tucked away rather than facing the street. Due to this setup, anyone on camera is firmly on my property, not passing by on the street. This also gives me a visual that covers my side gate to monitor anyone coming or going through to the back of my property.

Installing the Imou Doorbell 2S was very easy. It’s completely wire-free, running on a 5,000 mAh rechargeable battery that lasts up to 120 days per charge. The kit’s chime also doubles as a Wi-Fi extender, which keeps the connection stable. I had the doorbell mounted and linked to the Imou app in 10 minutes, and mounted the camera on my doorframe easily thanks to the paper mounting guide that clearly identifies where to drill holes for the screws. The doorbell works either wirelessly or can optionally be hard-wired into an existing system. I opted for the wireless Wi-Fi connection.

After a few weeks of testing, I have found the AI-powered human detection to be a game-changer, and it’s the feature I appreciate the most. Unlike my old doorbell, which spammed me with alerts for every gust of wind, this one alerts to what matters. It filters out non-human motion and only notifies me when it spots a person. It even recognizes people with hats and sunglasses on. This has slashed the number of pointless alerts clogging my phone, letting me focus on real activity. The 180° field of view (166° wide angle plus 30° pan) and smart tracking ensure no one slips by unnoticed, reducing blind spots.

Away Features

The two-way talk feature has been great for deliveries when I am not home. I’ve used it to tell drivers where to leave parcels when I’m not home, like directing them to a neighbor's house. The voice changer adds a well-thought-out safety twist, which I imagine might come in handy for females or older children who are home alone and want to ward off anyone they are wary of. The five customizable quick replies such as “Leave it by the door!” save time when I’m busy in online meetings.

Storage Options

Storage is hassle-free with a microSD card slot in the chime, which records locally. Alternatively, you can opt for cloud storage, initially through a 30-day free trial of Imou Protect. I stuck with local storage to avoid subscriptions, and it’s working well for me so far. I can view all locally stored activity alerts through the app.

Key Features of the Imou Doorbell 2S Kit

Here’s a rundown of the main features that make the Imou Doorbell 2S Kit stand out, based on my testing and product details:

Have We Come Far Enough?

The Imou Doorbell 2S Kit blows my old doorbell camera out of the water. Camera quality certainly has come a long way in the last decade or so since video doorbells first hit the market. The 2K resolution is a massive upgrade, delivering sharp footage day or night.

Doorbell cameras have evolved from glitchy, notification-spamming gadgets to smart, dependable tools that genuinely boost home security. The Imou Doorbell 2S Kit proves you don’t necessarily need a big-name brand or a monthly fee to get top-notch performance. For anyone tired of blurry footage, false alerts, or subscription traps, the Imou Doorbell 2S is a great option.

This feels like a personal security hub rather than a camera. The AI detection is what takes center stage for me in this review, sparing me from the constant run of irrelevant alerts that were previously an issue. No more notifications about rogue leaves—just clear, relevant updates about who and what is at my door.

The Negatives

As I have mentioned before, I live in the West of Scotland, and we get our fair share of rain here—sometimes straight down, sometimes sideways—meaning that rain droplets will regularly reach the camera. Some sort of hydrophobic coating on the lens cover would help the rain droplets fall off and minimize any blurred spots due to water sitting on the doorbell.

Due to the positioning of my front door, I would benefit from having the camera installed with a corner or wedge mount; however, at present, Imou does not offer this option. The camera does cover a wide view, so it is not a huge issue, but with a wedge mount I could take in more of my front garden too.

There is legal guidance, not yet law, to inform visitors to your property that you have CCTV. I would have liked to have a window sticker included within the packaging to inform anyone on my property that they were being recorded. I do already have one of these stickers from an old doorbell camera, so I am covered in that regard, but this would be a good addition.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Imou Doorbell 2S has been a great option for additional security at the front of my home and for communicating with visitors and delivery personnel when I am not home. I am impressed with the clarity of both daytime and night vision, clearly identifying visitors and action at the front door. This shows we have come a long way with the usefulness of doorbell cameras, which are something that will always be of benefit.
