Some say film photography is better than digital. Film has a more organic, natural look. Shooting with an analogue camera is a better experience and a purer form of photography. Others say digital photography is better because computer technology makes photography easier. You can shoot more frames and focus quicker, and experiment more by shooting more without the need for a second mortgage. Buckle up, this might get ranty.

As a photographer and videographer/filmmaker, having a small LED light or two in my bag is essential. I’ve accumulated 5 or 6 over the past few years, keen to try out different brands and styles of lights. Recently, I came across a relatively new brand called Harlowe. They just launched a pocket-sized light called the Iris 5 Spectra.

Viltrox lenses are a better choice than Nikon’s Z-mount native lenses. There, I said it. And this is coming from someone who has used Nikon for 40 years and may even be somewhat of a “fanboy.” I’ve been impressed with Viltrox lenses for a few years now—and own three—but the new Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 LAB full frame is a whole new level of impressive.

I visited my local camera store in Canada recently and chatted with the guy working there about film photography. He confirmed what I was already experiencing from spending too much time on YouTube, telling me how popular it’s become and how the popularity continues to grow. He said it’s mostly younger people getting into film photography, and they can’t keep a used film camera in the display case for more than a few days; they get snapped up. Why is that?

Leica producing their own black and white film comes as no surprise to me. It actually makes complete sense considering the popularity of vintage Leica film cameras in recent years and the rebirth of film photography. As someone who started out shooting black and white film, this is rather exciting news.

I’ve been a fan of SanDisk’s portable Extreme Pro SSDs for many years. When I travel with my laptop, I take a couple with me so I can back up my photos and videos each day. The ones I’ve been using transfer data up to 2,000 MB/s (sustainable read and write speed). They’re also very durable, with good water and dust resistance (IP65).

I must confess, in my 40 years as a photographer, I’ve never once used a fisheye lens. I’ve not seen the point. When I was younger, I thought the idea of a distorted image was silly. But recently, I’ve become bored with my photography. I’ve been looking to try new things and explore more creative ways of shooting subjects like landscapes, street, and travel. I’ve spent a lot of time pondering the best prime lens to use in recent years, as I’ve wanted to keep my gear to a minimum. Not so much to save on bulk or weight when taking it on a trip somewhere, but more to simplify my photography. I like just having one or two prime lenses. It forces me to work a little harder and look a little harder for compositions. That, to me, is what photography is all about. We should put a little effort into our craft and enjoy the process as we do it.
